Spring in Washougal: What Sunny Days and Cool Nights Mean for Your Home Comfort System

By Brittany Kent, Vice President of Expert’s Heating & Cooling Inc.

There’s something I truly love about spring in Washougal. The sun comes out, the afternoons warm up beautifully, and then once evening rolls in, that familiar cool Northwest air settles back over the valley. It’s one of the best times of year to live here.

Right now, most homeowners aren’t running their air conditioners yet. In fact, many of us are opening windows during the day and maybe turning the heat on briefly in the early morning or after sunset. It feels mild and manageable.

But even when your HVAC system isn’t working at full summer capacity, these warm days and cool nights still affect it more than you might think.

This time of year, your system often cycles on and off more frequently. You may use heat in the morning, turn everything off during the afternoon, and then need a little warmth again at night. That fluctuation puts different kinds of demands on your equipment than the steady cold of winter did. Components expand and contract with temperature changes. Thermostats get adjusted more often. Airflow patterns shift as windows are opened and closed.

Spring in Washougal is a transitional season, and your heating system is transitioning too.

I often tell homeowners that this is when small issues start to show themselves. Maybe the airflow doesn’t feel as strong in one room. Maybe the system runs a little longer than it used to on cooler evenings. Maybe your energy bill didn’t drop as much as you expected once winter ended. These aren’t emergency problems, but they’re early indicators that maintenance may be overdue.

Another important factor this time of year is indoor air quality. As trees bloom and pollen levels rise across Washougal and Clark County, your HVAC system plays a major role in filtering the air inside your home. Even if you’re not using cooling yet, your system’s fan and filtration still matter. A clean filter and properly functioning equipment help reduce circulating dust and allergens, which can make a noticeable difference for families during allergy season.

One of the reasons I encourage spring HVAC maintenance in Washougal is simple: preparation. Even though we’re not relying on air conditioning yet, warmer days are coming. The last thing any homeowner wants is to discover a problem during the first real heat wave. Scheduling service now, while temperatures are mild, allows us to check your system thoroughly and make any needed adjustments before you truly depend on it.

This is also the perfect time to check thermostat performance. With temperatures fluctuating between sunny afternoons and cool nights, your thermostat should respond accurately and consistently. If it’s outdated or misreading indoor temperatures, your system can run inefficiently without you realizing it.

Energy efficiency is always top of mind for me as both a business owner and a member of this community. When your heating and cooling system is clean and properly maintained, it operates more smoothly during these seasonal transitions. That means less wear and tear, lower energy usage, and fewer surprise repairs down the road.

What makes serving Washougal unique is understanding our patterns. We don’t jump straight from winter to summer. We ease into it. And your home comfort system needs to ease into it as well.

Spring is a time to reset. To replace filters. To inspect components that worked hard all winter. To make sure everything is ready for the months ahead. You may not be using your air conditioner today, but making sure it’s prepared before you need it is one of the smartest decisions a homeowner can make.

At Expert’s Heating & Cooling Inc., my goal has always been to help Washougal homeowners stay comfortable without stress or surprises. This beautiful stretch of sunny days and cool evenings is the perfect reminder that your system is still working quietly in the background, even when you’re not thinking about it.

If it’s been a while since your last service, spring is the ideal time to take care of it. That way, when summer eventually settles in, you can simply enjoy it.

Here’s to the sunshine, the crisp evenings, and homes that stay comfortable through every season here in Washougal.
